This month, I’ve focused on a particular theme: Dinosaurs. So it wouldn’t be a surprise to tell you I have rounded up five of the best picture books about dinosaurs.

Chalk by Bill Thomson

First up is Chalk by Bill Thomson. This book tells the story of imaginative kids who find a bag of magical chalk in the park and create a world that comes to life with it. It explores themes of creativity, friendship, and perspective. But more importantly, it allows children to develop their communication and storytelling ability. Bill Thomson tells the story with only pictures.

We Don’t Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins

We Don’t Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins is a “first day at school” narrative about a young dinosaur who struggles with big social changes in his new environment. The catch is that his new classmates are human and taste very good. The humor in this book is terrific, and the art is clean. On a side note: When I first started illustrating, I used pen and ink in the style of Bill Watterson. Ryan T. Higgins was the first artist I’d seen pull it off in picture book format.

The Dinosaur Who Discovered Hamburgers by Adison Books

In The Dinosaur Who Discovered Hamburgers by Adison Books, dinosaurs reign supreme. They love food and enjoy all your favorite dishes. One dinosaur named Scout goes on an expedition to find something new. Together with a group of scientists, he discovers the hamburger. My kids really loved this book. It is funny and silly and seems to hit all the right places for children. However, I was not too fond of it.

Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs by Byron Burton

Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs by Byron Burton is a book for young children (ages 1 to 3), but I believe the whole family can enjoy it. It tells a story about various dinosaurs and their different body parts, personalities, and behaviors. It ends with slumber, as any good children’s story does.

What the Dinosaurs Did Last Night: A Very Messy Adventure by Refe and Susan Tuma

Finally, What the Dinosaurs Did Last Night: A Very Messy Adventure by Refe and Susan Tuma, depicts the aftermath of what might happen if dinosaur figurines came to life at night. The illustrator uses toy photography, a relatively new art, although I am surprised not to find more picture books and graphic novels done this way. This book captures children’s imagination and makes it feel lifelike through photography.

I hope you enjoy reading these books as much as I did! Have a great time exploring books about dinosaurs with your kids!

xx Cory
