Roll and Write Games Are Gaining in Popularity

If you’re unfamiliar with roll-and-write games, they are essentially a type of board game where players use dice to generate numbers that dictate what they should write or draw on their personal score sheet.

They are trendy right now, primarily because they are cheap and accessible. Many of them are printable PDFs that you can download for free, although there are also many for which you can pay a small price. And, since there are no physical components, they are easy to transport and take up very little space.

How to Store Your Printable Game Sheets

If I keep them on a computer, stored away in a file somewhere, I will forget they are there. So, I like to have a physical space for them. I use a small binder with page protectors. That way, I can easily pull them out and flip through them when I am looking for something new to play. I keep the binder on our family game shelf where anyone, the children, or I can find it.

Should You Pay For Printables?

There are pros and cons to free and paid roll and write games. On the one hand, free printables are great because you can try out various games without spending any money.

On the other hand, paid printables often come with better-quality graphics and more polished gameplay. They also tend to have more replay value.

However, in the end, the line is a little fuzzy. Free graphics are circulated online and stolen repeatedly to generate high quantities of cheap content. As a result, you can often find on Etsy what you could also download for free online. Then there is hand-drawn content from artists who can’t keep up and must charge higher prices.

As a creator, it isn’t easy to know when to charge customers for a product and when to list it for free.

The graphics I used to create this game are drawn by hand using an iPad pencil and Procreate illustration software.
